The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Collins Oyuu has lauded the government for responding to teachers’ long-standing grievances and reaffirmed the union’s commitment to working closely with President William Ruto’s administration to enhance the welfare of educators across the country.
Speaking in Mombasa during a consultative meeting with officials from 21 Nyanza region KNUT branches, Oyuu said renewed cooperation between the union and the State had started yielding tangible results for teachers. The event was also attended by Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, education stakeholders, and senior government officials.
Oyuu highlighted several key achievements arising from ongoing dialogue with the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). Among these is the plan to shorten the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) cycle from the current four years to between two and three years. He said this adjustment would allow for quicker reviews of teachers’ salaries and working conditions, enabling them to cope better with changing economic realities.

The KNUT Secretary-General further welcomed the government’s decision to allocate Ksh1 billion to support the promotion of 50,000 teachers, terming it a major step toward boosting morale, career progression, and retention within the teaching profession.
He also applauded the recruitment of 76,000 teachers over the past two and a half years, describing the effort as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to addressing the severe teacher shortage in public schools.
“The government has shown genuine goodwill in addressing the challenges facing our teachers. As a union, we are ready to continue engaging constructively to ensure that the teaching profession remains respected and adequately supported,” said Oyuu.
Oyuu urged teachers to maintain unity and professionalism, adding that sustained dialogue between KNUT and the government was the surest way to secure lasting gains for the education sector.
