Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have told politicians to quit meddling in the recruitment of new teachers.
They said that hiring of teachers is a preserve of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Speaking during the 62nd Annual Delegates Conference in Kisumu, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu and his KUPPET counterpart Akello Misori said that politicians should stop traversing constituencies telling TSC who to recruit and who not to.
Saying that KNUT will reject attempts to arm-twist the union over the recruitment of new teachers, Oyuu asked politicians come out and explain whether TSC has deficiencies in terms of hiring new teachers.
Akello Misori said that as a union they will monitor how new teachers are recruited even though the expected 30,000 new teachers were still below the required number noting that the country has a shortfall of 190,000 teachers.
He further asked the government to look into the welfare of teachers in the country.
