Knut, Kuppet officials vow to champion teachers’ rights

By Charles Ojiambo

Teachers’ unions Knut and Kuppet have resolved to work together in championing union members’ rights in the country.
Union officials made the declaration during a meeting in Busia recently that was attended by five Kuppet Executive Secretaries from Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Nyandarua and Kakamega counties led by Mophat Okisai of Busia County, and two Knut Executive Secretaries; Mark Oseno  of Busia branch and his Teso branch counterpart Deogratius Owaya.
The executives claimed past regimes had oppressed teachers. They vowed to mobilize teachers and electorates to vote against Jubilee Government.
Kuppet Bungoma County executive secretary, Augustine Luketelo used the opportunity to urge teachers to vie for various elective posts. Oseno who has announced his interest in vying for Funyula parliamentary seat, promised if elected to fight for teachers’ rights from Parliament.
“Teachers let us stand up for our rights. If we don’t fight for our rights then nobody will do so,” Luketelo noted.
The executives also warned that teachers will not vote for leaders who have not stood with them during the hard times of agitating for their dues.
“We want to tell the MPs and other leaders who have been watching us from the fence as we struggle for our rights, that time is coming when they will need our support.”
