The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Gucha branch is gearing up for elections, with its Executive Secretary expressing confidence in retaining her seat.

Speaking to Education News,  Lucy Bwari Machuki, the outspoken official, said she has served teachers in the area for many years and built a strong rapport, adding that she sees no reason for rejection as she seeks another term. Machuki urged members to remain focused and reflect on her achievements, particularly her advocacy for the girl child to secure equal opportunities in education.

She highlighted her role in standing side by side with teachers in their push for better terms from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), promising to go even further if re‑elected.

“I have fought for teachers’ welfare and will continue to do more if given another chance. I hope teachers will vote for me on Sunday, the 11th of this month,” she said.

The Secretary acknowledged her main challenger as Branch Treasurer Michael Nyarango, whom she praised as a good and honest custodian of finances but urged him to remain in his current role. “The seat of an Executive Secretary needs someone eloquent, charismatic, and outgoing. That is why teachers love me, and I believe they will vote in my favour,” she remarked.

This year’s Gucha branch elections have attracted three contestants, including Joash Keraro of Kerongorori Primary School, Michael Nyarango of Omobera Primary School, and the incumbent Lucy Bwari Machuki, who is defending the seat for a third term, making the race one of the most closely watched contests in the union’s local leadership.
