The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Elgeyo Marakwet Branch has praised the ongoing peace and disarmament efforts in the region aimed at stabilizing the volatile region.

Branch Executive Secretary John Cheberi says the initiatives have significantly improved the learning environment and restored hope for lasting stability.

Speaking in Kapsowar, he commended residents for cooperating with authorities in surrendering illegal firearms; a move he said has borne tangible results.

“The surrender of weapons is finally bearing fruit. We thank the community for their cooperation in supporting peace and allowing normalcy to return,” said Cheberi.

He noted that schools across the region, which had previously been affected by insecurity and frequent disruptions, are now operating smoothly, with students and teachers able to learn and teach without fear.

“Learning activities are running smoothly in all schools. Our teachers are now able to deliver lessons effectively, and learners can concentrate on their studies,” he added.

Cheberi further observed that displaced families have since returned to their homes and are now enjoying peaceful nights — a stark contrast to the past when insecurity, driven by cattle rustling and armed conflict, was rampant.

“Unlike before, people are now sleeping peacefully in their homes. This is a clear sign that peace is taking root,” he remarked.

However, Cheberi raised concern over the increasing use and sale of bhang (marijuana) in the region, which he said was fueling criminal activities among the youth.

“We appeal to security agencies to conduct a thorough crackdown on the sale and consumption of bhang. It is contributing to moral decay and rising cases of youth involvement in crime,” he warned.

According to local security reports, the ongoing operation has so far led to the recovery of 286 illegal firearms, 2,093 rounds of ammunition, and even one rifle grenade, signaling the scale of disarmament underway in the troubled region.

Local residents have also welcomed the efforts, describing the operation as a “turning point” in the long fight against banditry and insecurity that has plagued parts of Elgeyo Marakwet for years.

“This initiative has renewed our hope. For the first time in many years, we can talk about a future without fear,” said one resident who spoke during a community meeting.

KNUT officials are now calling for sustained peace efforts and continued community involvement to ensure long-term stability, particularly in areas previously labeled as conflict hotspots.
