The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Trans Mara branch wants P1 teachers to be prioritized in the upcoming recruitment of teachers.

Branch Executive Secretary Willy Korir observed that with the abolishment of the P1 certificate, holders will be greatly disenfranchised.

Speaking in Kilgoris town, Korir stated the country has many P1 teachers, most of whom have suffered unemployment for many years.

“We have many P1 holders in the country who have suffered for many years. As a Union, we want to ask TSC to give priority to the teachers in the upcoming recruitment,” he said.

His remarks come after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced plans to recruit 20,000 teachers in January 2025 to tackle teacher shortage in the country.

He lamented that diploma and degree holders have been favored in the recent recruitments, a tendency he termed as unacceptable.

While welcoming the recruitment, he pointed out that teachers play a pivotal role as far as attainment of the country’s academic agenda is concerned.

Korir also appealed for the urgent resolution of the hitches facing the Social Health Authority (SHA), stating that many teachers have been unable to access services despite contributing to the scheme since its inception.

“There are so many hitches in the Social Health Authority and many teachers have been unable to access treatment. KNUT hereby asks the government to address this problem so that our members and their family members can benefit,” added Korir.
