KNUT decries acute shortage of teachers in Taita Taveta

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Taita Taveta County branch Executive Secretary Lennox Mshila has decried an acute shortage of teachers in the region.

Speaking to Education News from Wundanyi town recently, he revealed that learning in schools in the area has been greatly hampered by teacher shortage, and asked the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to recruit more tutors in the to end understaffing in schools.

“The move would equally enable teachers to discharge their daily duties more diligently”, remarked the executive secretary.

Mshila, disclosed that teachers in the region are currently overloaded with their work simply because the population of pupils is higher compared to the existing number of teachers who are not enough either.

However, he further stated that the prevailing situation is therefore bent to defeat teachers concerted efforts in offering quality education to the pupils, and the government should urgently put mechanism in place to address the issue, hence enable schools to operate smoothly.

He also attributed low academic standards and dismal performance in national examinations in the area to the shortage.

At the same time, the executive secretary urged education stakeholders in the region to team up and provide essential physical learning facilities to schools to enhance effective teaching and learning.

He lamented that many schools in the area still lack modern infrastructure, adding that the situation has forced pupils to learn under unhealthy environment.
