Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bungoma East Branch has called out National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula over remarks allegedly linking teachers to cases of teenage pregnancies, terming the statement “misleading and disparaging.”
Addressing mourners during a funeral service in Sitikho ward, Webuye West constituency, KNUT Bungoma East Branch Executive Secretary Robert Mandila and Bungoma County KNUT Women Representative Metrine Arabu said the comments were an affront to the teaching profession and demanded a public apology.
“The Speaker’s remarks amount to an insult to teachers and a mockery of the education sector,” said Mandila. “We call on him to retract the statement and apologize to educators nationwide.”

The union officials maintained that teachers have consistently played a pivotal role in safeguarding students, warning that scapegoating them distracts from deeper social and parental responsibilities in addressing teenage pregnancies.
In a separate appeal, KNUT urged parents to collaborate with school administrations to ensure learners are not sent home for fees this term, noting its brevity as national examinations approach. The officials further reminded education stakeholders to comply with a government directive barring meetings in schools during the third term to prevent disruptions to learning.
