KNUT calls for a quick probe following the death of teacher Albert Ojwang’ in police custody

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called for answers and quick probe following the death of teacher albert Ojwang’ while in the police custody.

KNUT in a letter signed by the secretary general, Collins oyuu, expressed its condeleses and mourned the late teacher as a devoted, energetic and promising young professional teacher who upon his death on June 8,2025, was a registered teacher in Taita Taveta county.

“We strongly condemn the incident and express our sorrow over the loss of one our member. We are calling upon the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry to determine the events leading to Albert Ojwang’s death,” the letter reads.

The union insisted that the findings of the investigations be made public and the police officers found responsible be held fully accountable in accordance with the law. KNUT further underscored the moral obligation of police to protect, rather than endangering those under their watch.

The untimely demise of Albert Ojwang’ has sent a wave of grief across the teaching fraternity with KNUT standing in solidarity with his family, friends and fellow teachers.

The union has also emphasized the need for urgent reforms to restore public trust in law enforcement institutions.

Albert Ojwang’s death has raised concerns about the conduct of police, it has also triggered public conversations about the safety of detainees as well as police reforms in Kenya.
