KNUT Bungoma branch rejects the proposed 3% housing levy

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Bungoma branch has vowed to reject, in all possible ways, the proposed 3 per cent salary deductions towards the Affordable Housing programme.

Addressing the press in Webuye town, the branch Chairman Mr. Moses Masika noted that teachers are already grappling with high cost of living and harsh economic conditions.

He noted that slashing their salaries to finance the programme is against Labour laws adding that public participation did not take place before the bill was constituted.

According to Masika, the Government should instead increase teachers’ salaries by at least 60% before engaging them on the deductions.

The KNUT boss asked the Legislators to instead shoot down the Finance Bill 2023 in its entirety.

The unionist however slammed Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa for what he termed as continued harassing of teachers and interfering with education matters.

He said that Barasa should apologize to the affected teachers or else he will mobilize all teachers to conduct mass action over the matter.
