KNUT branch to help teachers own homes

By Kage Njoroge

Murang’a North Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) branch has embarked on a strategy to enable teachers acquire affordable and decent houses for their families.
The union is organising and encouraging members to buy huge pieces of land jointly and later subdivide. According to branch Executive Secretary, Roseline Njoki, they aim to facilitate teachers own land in high end locations. The branch has already acquired 200 acres which are being sold to teachers to set up gated community estates.
The property is located in Makuyu, Maragua constituency about three kilometres from Thika-Nairobi Highway near Kenol Township. “The branch has entered into an agreement with the owner to enable teachers buy plots in this land at affordable price,” said Njoki. She said teachers are given the offer to book plots by depositing 10 per cent of the total price.
The KNUT official noted teachers were using a lot of time struggling to make savings, but joint buying of land will now ease the burden on them and speed up home ownership.
She called on the government to formulate policies which will facilitate Kenyans to build and own homes.
