The Secretary General of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Collins Oyuu has welcomed the move by the government to postpone school opening across the country.

Speaking to one of the local media house on Tuesday, May 7, Oyuu urged the parents and teachers to remain patient as the State seeks to find solutions on how to rehabilitate the most affected schools by the on-going floods.

“Looking at the situation of the country as it is, especially at the time the decision was made, the situation could have been dangerous had it not been avoided.

“I look at social media right now I see schools, classes are submerged, water levels are almost at window level and most of the destruction is on the infrastructure and learning materials in those schools and the security of whoever would wish to get into those schools is also compromised,” Oyuu said.

He said that the 110 union branches across the country have been working closely with the education ministry in giving daily reports on the state of schools as the government looks to plan on when to reopen the schools for second term.

Oyuu further asked the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to do thorough data collection on the degree of interference the floods have caused so that should there be any reasonable change then the schools will be opened swiftly.

This comes after President William Ruto promised the government will be spending a whopping KSh1 Billion to rehabilitate the schools which have been worst hit by floods.
