The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Taita Taveta Executive Secretary, Lenox Mshila has called upon parents to keep an eye on their children during this campaign period.

Speaking in Maili Kumi in Mwatate Subcounty during the burial of Madam Margaret of Maili Kumi Primary school on 7th July, Mshila urged the parents to prevent their children from following campaign trails which could lead to their loss or injury.

“We are in a campaign period. As parents, let’s not forget that education is important. Campaigns will come and go but education will remain. Exams are coming this year and if we don’t take education seriously, we will end up performing poorly,” he said.

He termed the demise of Madam Margaret as a blow to the teachers community, the school and the community. He added that Madam Margaret was a dedicated teacher who motivated pupils and performed her duties well.

Maili Kumi primary Headteacher Madam Lilian Jumbe eulogised Madam Margaret as a dedicated and hard-working teacher who has left a gap that will not be easily filled.

“The school has lost a hard-working teacher. We don’t know how we will move on as the staff. Students loved their teacher. They are very saddened by her untimely demise,” she said.

Condoling with the family of the late madam Margaret, Taita Taveta deputy governor Majala Mlagui stated that losing a teacher was a big blow to her family, the school and the community at large. He vowed to stand with the teachers as they grieved.

Later on, Mr Mshila urged teachers to remain nited and join the various welfare groups in order to make it easier to carry out welfare activities when need arises.

Furthermore, he urged teachers and parents to elect leaders who value education and development for the betterment of education and the community.

“As we go to the ballot to exercise our democratic rights, let’s make wise decisions and elect leaders who will raise the education standards in our county,” he concluded.
