The Kenya National Union of teachers( KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu has revealed that the government will use affirmative action to hire unemployed P1 teachers who attained 45 and above years.
Oyuu said that President William Ruto had assured him about the consideration of this calibre of teachers who graduated from from P1 Teachers’ Training Colleges more than a decade ago but have never been absorbed by the government that now their cries had been heard.
“We have been assured of these long awaited recruitment exercise, and it will start this coming December.” He said.
Oyuu who was addressing the public at Rongo town on Sunday, November 23, said that the government has increased the money meant for teachers’ salaries from Ksh1 billion in 2025 to Ksh2 billion for 2026.
The Union boss expressed hope on the success of the recruitment exercise that he said will bring hope to the long affected graduates enabling them to provide for their families.
He said that the move will be a fulfilment of the promises President William Ruto made to more that 10,000 teachers who visited him in state house recently.

In his address to teachers at state house in September this year, President Ruto asked the Ministry of education to work in conjunction with the TSC to compile data for all qualified unemployed teachers who have stayed home for a long time for employment priority.
The head of state asked to be given 60 days for his proposed affirmative action on the recruitment of affected teachers.
Collins Oyuu thanked the president for the gesture and asked teachers to remain loyal and optimistic on the greater things to come to them from the Broad Based Government.
He also assured that teachers who have stagnated in the same job group for a long time will start getting promotions from January because as his office has streamlined and iron their long standing squabbles with the TSC who agreed to grant justice to teachers according to their professional progression requirements.
