KNUT blames KWS over leniency as hyena attacks Grade 1 pupil

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Makueni branch Executive Secretary Benson Ndambuki has raised concerns over their safety as fear continues to rise among teachers and students in areas bordering the Tsavo National Park after a Grade 1 pupil was attacked by a hyena.

The pupil was attacked while on his way to school yesterday in Kiumoni Vilage, Kathonzweni sub-location in Machakos County.

“We urgently appeal to the Kenya Wildlife Service officers to implement necessary measures to prevent human-wildlife conflict in this region,” Ndambuki said.

Mama Mary Kavata, the victim’s mother while expressing her distress, said that his son’s injuries were severe and he was undergoing medication at the Makueni Referral Hospital.

He added that two children who were in his son’s company fortunately escaped with minor injuries.

Consequently, residents and education stakeholders have threatened to shut down schools in the area unless measures are taken to address the situation.

They noted that recently, the County witnessed three fatalities caused by elephant attacks since the start of the year.

They said that the attacks have caused enormous destruction of valuable properties worth millions of shillings and caused residents to fear for their lives.
