KNUT backs CBC review taskforce, pledges to voice teachers’ concerns

By Roy Hezron

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has backed the recently formed education review taskforce by President Ruto thanking him for his quick intervention on the challenges facing implementation of the Competence Based Curriculum (CBC).

Speaking during World Teachers Day celebrations at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) on October 5, 2022 KNUT Secretary General Collins Henry Oyuu revealed that the panel consisted of academicians who were neutral and well-versed in education matters.

“One of the challenges raised by Kenyans after the advent of the new leadership was the implementation of the new curriculum – CBC. Our President took it up and quickly formed the Working Party on Education Reforms to address the concerns,” said Oyuu.

He expressed confidence that the Party would be able to work within the given timeframe and deliver to Kenyans adding that its Secretariat which is made up of education technocrats would filter out the best recommendations during public participation.

“The Secretariat is made of technocrats from the Ministry of Education, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development),” said Oyuu.

He added: “This, we believe will bring out the best from the collections that will be done from the public and the input from the professionals that will help address the bottlenecks witnessed in the implementation process.”

Oyuu revealed that the union conducted a very structured research both in 2019 and 2022 concerning CBC and they shall present their findings to the Party which he said shall represent the voice of the teachers.

The 7 secretaries assigned to the Party are Dr. Elyas Addi, Patita Tingoi, Dr. David Njengere (KNEC CEO), Prof. Jackson Too, Dr. Reuben Nthamburi Mugwuku (TSC Director of Quality Assuarance and Standards), Richard Miano and Eunice Gachoka.

The taskforce has six (6) months to complete their work while issuing the President with a progress report every two (2) months from the date of formation (September 29, 2022) and a final report at the end of term.
