Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kisii South Branch has asked the government to employ more teachers to cater for the ever-increasing number of learners in both Primary and Secondary Schools.

Kisii South Executive Secretary Jared Mariera said the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is being unrealistic when they demand improved education results from teachers in understaffed schools.

He accused the Teachers Service Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia of being mean when it comes to the employment and replacement of teachers.

“The Teachers Service Commission keeps on sacrificing teachers to produce good examination results through their pupils, but they do not care about the working conditions of those teachers.” He said.

He said many teachers retire or die every year but their gaps go unfilled causing a perennial teacher shortage in the country.

Mariera was speaking during the branch Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Suneka Social Hall.

The meeting was attended by members from the neighbouring branches of Gucha, Kisii Central, Homabay, Migori and Kisumu.

On teachers’ salary increment, Gucha Branch KNUT Executive Secretary Lucy Machuki said the government’s offer of 2.4 per cent was not commensurate to the heavy workload the teachers have following the addition of Junior Secondary School (JSS) and 100 per cent transition in schools

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Nyancha Region Chairman Mr. Stephen Mochama, asked the Commission to avoid transferring teachers frequently because the practice interrupted the continuity of established systems to mould pupils by individual teachers.

He appreciated the reversal of the delocalization policy on teachers saying it salvaged most teachers’ families that had started to shutter.

Mochama asked teachers to continue working hard in moulding the children of this country by sticking to their professional code of conduct and regulations.
