The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has called on all demonstrating Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers to report to their work stations immediately to pave way for negotiations to meet their demands.

In a press meeting yesterday, KNUT Secretary General (SG) Collins Oyuu urged the interns to swallow their pride and agree to hand over the matter to KNUT, asserting that the union has demonstrated interest to help find a lasting solution.

He revealed that the union has already taken over the case, urging Teachers Service Commission (TSC) not to victimize any teacher who was involved in the demonstrations and recall all the show cause letters which have been issued to the rebelling tutors.

“We suspected in the long run the employer would issue these teachers with show cause letters with an intention of commencing disciplinary action against them. Indeed, these teachers have already been served,” said Oyuu.

Oyuu asked the commission to conform to the Code of Regulations for Teachers (2015) in recruitment and employment of teachers, saying they are ready to engage with it in a high level discussion.

The union has further called on the commission to develop a framework that would assist to amicably settle the dispute with interns.

He reiterated that the union is currently working on a return to work formula with the employer on behalf of the intern teachers.

KNUT is taking a different approach to the JSS demonstrations that have slowed down learning in some parts of the country, departing from the bare knuckles head-on combat with TSC by KUPPET.
