The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has asked the government to beef up security in all volatile areas of the North Rift for learning to be possible.
The Secretary General (SG) Collins Oyuu said insecurity has hampered learning activities and caused fear among locals.
Speaking in Kericho town, he disclosed that he recently postponed an AGM in Baringo due to security concerns, which he said is unacceptable.
“Insecurity is a major concern in the region. Recently, I was forced to postpone an AGM due to security concerns. This is unacceptable and also dangerous for the branch Secretary and other officials,” he said.
He cited an incident where a teacher was killed by bandits, terming the incident a matter of great concern.
He noted that if learning has to be uniform for every child to access education, the insecurity challenge must be tackled.
“If learning is to be uniform and all children access education, which is a basic right, the government should tackle this problem once and for all. We cannot release our teachers to AGMs nor send children to school when there is insecurity,” said Oyuu.
Despite the heavy presence of security personnel in the region, banditry attacks continue to be reported, with the pressure piling on the government to change tact in order to end the menace.
