The Kenya National Union of Teachers has asked the Ministry of Education to release the 30% fund allocated to schools to pay support staff.

Union officials from Kakamega said that the situation in schools is getting dire, following reported cases of burglaries since the guards hired by the institutions quit their jobs because they have not been paid after schools were closed in March following the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking to the journalists, Kakamega County Knut chairman Mr. Patrick Chungani said that it is an issue that calls for urgent attention from the Ministry of Education.

“The situation in schools is worrying since the government appears to have forgotten its responsibility of ensuring that schools are maintained,” Mr. Chungani said.

Mr. Chungani said in Kakamega East, Lirhanda Girls Secondary School and Malone Primary School had been broken into and several items including school computers stolen.

He therefore urged the ministry to release fund in time to sustain operations such as; electricity, water, wages for the support staff and conservancy.
