Knut asks CS to go slow on education reforms

A Kenya National Union of Teachers official has asked Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed to go slow on education reforms started by her predecessor Fred Matiang’i.
Keiyo Knut Secretary Musa Busienei claimed the reforms were rolled out in quick succession and teachers are facing difficulties in implementing them.
The unionist said numerous reforms may hurt the implementation of the new 2-6-6-3 curriculum.
He cited National Management Information System (NEMIS) and Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) as diverting teachers’ attention at a time when they are busy implementing the new curriculum.
“We want the education CS to go slow on most of these reform policies. The policies were done in a hurry and that is why we have noticed errors in the free textbooks supplied by the Government,” Busienei told Education News in his Iten office.
He said teachers are busy collecting data for NEMIS and TPAD at the expense of attending to learners.
“It is not practically possible to have details of all learners in the country in NEMIS by March 31. The ministry should extend the deadline for another two to three months,” he said.
