KNUT accuses KUPPET of organizing nationwide protests among JSS teachers

Collins Oyuu, KNUT Secretary-General

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has pointed fingers at the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) for orchestrating nationwide demonstrations among Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

Speaking at a fundraiser at Gagra Catholic Church, KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu alleged that KUPPET is financing rallies to exert pressure on the government for the permanent and pensionable hiring of JSS teachers.

Oyuu deemed it inappropriate for KUPPET to lead JSS teachers into protests, arguing that labor unions should focus on advocacy and counsel rather than inciting demonstrations.

While KNUT shares the goal of securing permanent and pensionable positions for JSS teachers, Oyuu underscored the need for proper procedures rather than public protests.

He advocated for dialogue as the sole resolution to the current issues faced by JSS teachers.

KNUT expressed its readiness to engage with the government through the Ministry of Education to explore avenues for absorbing the instructors permanently.

Over the past two weeks, teachers across various counties have protested, threatening a January strike if their employment terms remain unchanged.

In Migori County, JSS tutor interns, following discussions with KUPPET, voiced their demand for permanent positions after completing training on the new curriculum.

Orwa Jasolo, Chairman of the Migori branch Teachers’ Union, criticized the government for reneging on its commitment to offering permanent contracts to these teachers.
