The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has asked educational institutions to register with the authority as qualification awarding institutions.

The qualifications body was recently directed by the Education Cabinet Secretary, Hon Ezekiel Machogu, to effectively play its role in ensuring quality, relevance and global competitiveness of national qualifications.

According to Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) Act No.22 of 2014, KNQA is mandated to co-ordinate, supervise development of policies on national qualifications, and provide for the recognition of attainment or competencies including skills, knowledge, attitudes and values.

The Act further mandates KNQA to develop a system of competence, life-long learning and attainment of national qualifications as well facilitate linkages, credit transfers and exemptions and a vertical and horizontal mobility at all levels to enable entry, re-entry and exit coordinate and promote the recognition of national qualifications internationally.

So far, the Authority has accredited 21 qualification-warding institutions and registered 1,289 qualifications onto the framework.

“I want to congratulate and thank institutions that have successful been accredited and registered in the Kenya National Qualifications Framework as a Qualifications Awarding Institution (QAI) and we look forward to continue working them in shaping the future of our country with relevant and competitive qualifications.

These institutions have continued to impact the TVET sector as far as competency-based education and training is concerned and underscored the critical the role that the industry has played in ensuring that various programmes are  registered in the framework  and are in tandem with industry expectations, thus assuring the Country  of relevance in the labour market,” said CPA Rosemary Njogu, the acting KNQA Council Chairperson.

The Authority has vowed to continue working with other stakeholders in the sector to ensure that the agenda of TVET remains robust and able to spur the economy of Kenya through the production of well skilled youth.

KNQA will effectively play its role in ensuring quality, relevance and global competitiveness of our national qualifications.

This is attainable if all the stakeholders including – Public and Private sectors; Government Agencies; education and training institutions; professional bodies; players in both formal and informal sectors; and development partners pulled together.

The Vision 2030 emphasizes the relationship between education and training and the labour market for a relevant, knowledgeable, and well-equipped workforce. As a country we must match skills produced and labour market needs.

The Authority is working with other stakeholders in the sector to ensure that the agenda of TVET remains robust and able to spur the economy of Kenya through the production of well skilled youth.
