The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) has successfully hosted a pivotal capacity-building workshop in Naivasha, bringing together senior officials and education leaders to enhance their understanding of Kenya’s comprehensive qualifications systems.

The initiative underscores KNQA’s commitment to strengthening the quality and recognition of qualifications across the nation.

The workshop gathered registrars from a wide array of Qualifications Awarding Bodies (QABs), including universities, national polytechnics, and professional examination bodies.

Also in attendance were crucial representatives from the industrial training pathway (National Industrial Training Authority – NITA) and the basic education subsector (Directorate of Quality Assurance and Standards – DQAS), fostering a holistic approach to national qualifications.

The core objective of the workshop was to deepen stakeholder understanding and build capacity around key instruments vital to Kenya’s qualifications landscape. These include the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF), a comprehensive framework that classifies qualifications across different levels, ensuring national recognition and international comparability.

Also discussed was the Kenya National Qualifications Classification Standard (KNQCS), a standardized system for classifying and coding qualifications based on learning outcomes and content, aligning with international benchmarks like the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED).

The workshop also covered the Kenya Credit Accumulation and Transfer System (KCATS), a mechanism designed to facilitate learner mobility and progression by allowing the transfer of academic credits between different programs, institutions, and qualification levels.

Finally, the Qualifications Alignment and Validation (QAV) process, the procedure for evaluating and formally recognizing qualifications, both local and foreign, into the KNQF, was a key topic.

The esteemed gathering saw the presence of prominent figures dedicated to advancing Kenya’s education and training sector. Among them were Mr. Joseph Njau, representing the Principal Secretary, State Department for TVET and a member of the KNQA Council; Stanley Kiptis, KNQA Council Chairperson; Dr. Alice Kande, KNQA CEO; and Prof. Maurice Okoth, the visionary founder of the Registrars’ Association of Universities in Kenya.
