KNPA Wants TSC to Take Actions Against Principals Increasing Fees

The Chairman Kenya National Parent Association (KNPA) Nicholas Maiyo now wants the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to take action against principals who have increased fees in school.

Speaking recently in Eldoret town, Maiyo said parents should not be allowed to pay more than what has been recommended by the Ministry of Education.

“As parents we are not happy with the move by some principals of increasing fees despite parents suffering due to the effects of coronavirus, I want to call upon the teacher’s employer TSC to take stern actions against such principals,” said the Chairman.

He said some schools are even charging double the amount parents paid the previous term.

“I have already received fee structures from about 500 schools, which indicates that that the fee supersedes what has been underlined by the ministry of education. As parents we will not allow such to happen while we stay mum,” noted Maiyo.

This comes after the Ministry of Education through the Principal Secretary of Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan sent circulars to County Directors and Sub-county Directors warning them of principals who charge extra fees contrary to the set regulations and that if cases arise, they should report to the Ministry of Education for disciplinary action.

He further warned principals against sending students home due to lack of fees saying it is against the law and that most parents cannot afford fees.

“I want to call upon principals across the country to have mercy on parents since most of them have been badly hit by the effects of Covid-19 by not sending their children home for fees but instead they should discuss on how they will clear the fees since even if you send them home they will not pay the fees in full due to financial constraints,” added the Chairman.
