The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued a strong warning to school administrators, candidates, and the general public to remain vigilant against fraudsters posing as KNEC officials during the ongoing national examinations.
This warning comes after some individuals were arrested in Garissa County for impersonating KNEC officials and attempting to extort money from school heads under the guise of monitoring examinations.
The suspects, who were nabbed by detectives following a tip-off from education officers, had been visiting schools claiming to be on official assignment from the council.
They were found in possession of fake identification cards and forged documents bearing KNEC logos.

KNEC emphasized that authentic monitoring officers do not ask for bribes or any form of payment while on duty.
“Anyone who visits an examination centre claiming to be from KNEC and demands money should be reported to the police immediately,” the council stated in its public notice.
Centre Managers have been urged to remain cautious and verify the identities of all visitors entering examination centres.
Any suspicious individuals should be reported to both the police and the Sub County Director of Education without delay. For quick verification or to report fraudulent activity, the council has provided the following hotlines: KNEC Call Centre: 0800721410 / 0800724900
EACC Hotline: 1551 and IPOA Hotline: 1559
KNEC further stressed that integrity during examinations is a shared national responsibility and warned that those caught impersonating officers or engaging in bribery schemes will face the full force of the law.
“Integrity during examinations safeguards the future of our children and the credibility of our education system,” the council noted.
