KNEC rule on candidature unfair, says principal

Principal Chelezo mixed private secondary school Ochwada Benson has expressed concern on the government directive on exam centre, saying it may cause disruption for candidates and some may underperform.

The new directive by KNEC will apply to both primary and secondary candidates starting from 2021.

The directive states that no school with less than 40 candidates will be allowed to register as exam centre, a move that has affected many private schools making them to urge the government revoke the move.

“The children will be distracted by the movement to exam centres especially in schools that don’t meet the requirements. Will the school have enough facilities especially for practicals. It will also be very tiresome to the students,” added Ochwada.

Ochwada said the school which is in Wote in Makueni County targets 30 students per class. This year they got 80 applicants.

The principal said if the directive will not be revoked, they will have to increase their number to 40 in the next form one lot to meet the requirement once they reach form four since they have  no any other option.

“For now we will have no option in our candidates apart from taking them to another exam centre since we are less than 40,” he added.

Currently the school has a population of 84 students. In 2019 it had a mean grade of 6.2 and 2020 a mean grade of 5.9. The entry marks is 300 and they focus majorly on vulnerable children where they give partial sponsorship to help transform them in terms of education.
