The 2026 national examinations marking exercise has entered a crucial stage following the commencement of physical training for examiners at 10 designated centres nationwide.
This development follows a successful series of online training sessions held last week, which laid the groundwork for the hands-on phase now underway.
According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), a total of 6,500 examiners drawn from KJSEA, KCSE and Teacher Education programmes are currently being trained to strengthen competence in marking, assessment standards and adherence to national examination guidelines.
The training aims to equip examiners with the skills needed to ensure accuracy, fairness, and consistency in marking, while also reinforcing quality assurance mechanisms in the national assessment system.
Speaking during the opening of the training sessions, KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr David Njengere emphasised the council’s commitment to expanding its examiner pool in line with the growing number of candidates sitting national examinations each year.
“The council aims to expand the examiner database to match the steady rise in both examination and assessment candidature. This training and subsequent recruitment of examiners will enhance marking efficiency and foster a conducive marking environment,” said Dr Njengere.

The physical training marks a key milestone in the preparations for the 2026 examination cycle, with KNEC expected to scale up its capacity to handle increasing volumes of scripts while maintaining credibility and integrity in the assessment process.
KNEC has assured candidates and the public that all measures are in place to ensure a smooth, transparent, and efficient marking process once examinations are completed later in the academic cycle.
