KNEC issues fresh guidelines for KCSE supervisors, invigilators

David Njeng'ere, KNEC CEO.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has issued fresh guidelines for the recruitment of this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) supervisors and invigilators.

In the new guidelines seen by this publication, supervisors and invigilators will no longer be deployed to centres that they have vested interest as going forward, supervisors, invigilators and centre managers will be required to declare interest of the examination centre they are posted to.

Supervisors as well as invigilators for KCSE examination must be secondary school teachers, a change from the previous years where only supervisors were high school tutors while invigilators were drawn from primary schools.

In addition, only supervisors and invigilators who have registered in the CP2 system will be deployed to manage the 2024 national examination and assessments where their claims shall be processed.

The teachers in schools with learners of Stage-Based Pathway will invigilate their own learners.

Further, for every 10 learners there should be one invigilator. These invigilators will be required to sign the declaration form like other centres. No supervisor or Centre Manager will be deployed for KILEA Centres.

The centre managers have been tasked to ensure attendance of the supervisors and invigilators posted in their centres by confirming their details and the workstation on a daily basis.

KCSE supervisors will be rotated on a weekly basis as opposed to the previous format where one was tasked at a given school for the entire period of exams and as a result, he or she must prepare brief handing over notes for the incoming supervisor.

KNEC added that supervisors and invigilators will not be deployed in a centre they have served in the last two (2) consecutive years.

Furthermore, only one supervisor will be deployed for every 200 candidates while only teachers who are qualified and employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) shall be deployed in exam centres.

Both hosted and hosting centres will have their own centre managers. However, the hosting centre manager will be expected to collect and return examination materials from the exam container.

KNEC also instructed that sub-counties that experience challenges with recruitment should write to si@knec.ac.ke with an indication the challenge and assistance will be provided.
