MPs want KNEC to waive TVET colleges’ exam fees

By Tony Wafula

Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga and his Kessess counterpart Julius Ruto have called on the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to remove extra fees surcharged on Technical Training Institute (TTI) students during the national exam registration.

Speaking at Kisiwa Technical Training Institute on Friday during the launch of the Jitume Kazi digital lab, Kalasinga decried the high number of students at the institution who miss out on national examinations due to the high fees.

The two legislators said that they will sponsor a motion in parliament proposing that the examinations be paid by the government through the Ministry of Education.

“Many students in technical institutions end up absconding exams due to huge amount of fees, let KNEC remove those extra levies to allow our boys and girls to do exams,” he said.

Kalasinga noted that his Kabuchai NG-CDF kitty will continue injecting cash to Kisiwa TTI so that more students acquire skills and knowledge, adding that in the last allocation his NG-CDF pumped 1.2 million to the institution.

The MP lauded the Ministry of ICT CS Eliud Owalo for choosing Kisiwa and Matili TTIs to launch the digital ICT hubs saying that the project will go a long way in helping the youth secure online jobs.

However, Kalasinga called on the government to further develop the TTI to national status.

Bungoma has three major TTIs namely; Matili Institute in Kimilili, Sang’alo Institute in Kanduyi and Kisiwa TTI in Kabuchai but none have national status yet.
