The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Board Chairperson, Joseah Cheruiyot, has challenged the College management to embrace innovative solutions aimed at addressing emerging market demands and enhancing the competitiveness of KMTC graduates.

Speaking during a three-day academic retreat in Mombasa, Cheruiyot emphasized the need for forward-thinking approaches in response to a rapidly evolving global job market.

“I urge you to listen to students, as some of their ideas will enhance our competitiveness in the global job market,” he said. “Staff should also continue to propose initiatives that will drive transformation within the College.”

The retreat, which brought together members of the management team and academic departments, is focused on deliberating key issues affecting teaching and learning, as well as reviewing and aligning institutional policies with emerging trends in education and healthcare training.

In recent months, KMTC has introduced entrepreneurship and soft skills programmes designed to equip learners with practical competencies needed to navigate today’s dynamic employment landscape.

Deputy Director, Academics, Dr. Nyawira Mwangi, urged staff to maximize the opportunity presented by the forum to deepen their understanding of the institution’s operations and improve service delivery.

“This forum provides an opportunity for us to reflect on our work and explore ways of enhancing the quality of training and services we offer,” she said.

During the session, Heads of Department showcased various programmes under the “Know Your Graduates” initiative, aimed at clarifying distinctions among courses amid rising public interest and inquiries.

Among the programmes highlighted were Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Orthopaedic Technology, Orthopaedic Trauma Medicine, Dental Technology, Community Oral Health, Medical Engineering, and Optometry.

Staff were encouraged to take a more active role in educating the public about the diverse programmes available at the College and the wide range of career opportunities they present.

Registrar Ronald Wasike noted that Physiotherapy has become the second most sought-after programme in the international job market after Nursing.

“Several of our programmes are highly marketable but remain less known to the public,” he said. “We must do more to create awareness and guide prospective students on the opportunities available.”

The retreat also brought together members of the KMTC Board of Directors, including Hardlyne Lusui, Joseph Atonga, Paul Cheboi, and James Sitieney, among others.

The March retreat underscores KMTC’s ongoing efforts to align its training programmes with global workforce needs while strengthening its role as a leading institution in healthcare education.
