A total of Kshs. 205 million has been repaid back by Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students who have benefited from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) through the Afya Elimu Loan programme.

Speaking during the disbursement of the funds to beneficiaries of the current academic year 2021/2022 on October 27, 2022; HELB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Charles Ringera stated the repayment is from the initial disbursement of Kshs. 3.5 billion whereby around 49,000 students have benefited from the loans in the past.

“13,187 accounts have matured for repayment, with 2,500 students already having paid back in full, and a further 7,000 in the process of repaying,” said Ringera.

KMTC received Ksh 680 million from the National Treasury to finance the studies of needy students in the current academic year, with the intentions of increasing access to higher education at the college.

“The funding targets students from humble backgrounds; we have so far received the first tranche of Ksh 170 million and we encourage eligible students to apply,” said Zachary Muburi Muita, KMTC Board.

KMTC CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch lauded the National Government for considering KMTC stating that the financing will be beneficial for needy students who are not able to pay tuition fee.
