KMTC partners with UNESCO to promote health, well-being of students

The Kenya Medical Training Collage (KMTC) has partnered with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in a project dubbed Our Lives, Our Rights, Our Future (03 Plus) that is aimed at realizing positive health, education and gender equality outcomes through sustained reductions in new HIV infections, unintended pregnancy and gender-based violence.

Daphnee Blanc, the Regional Project Officer, Education for Health and Wellbeing lauded the Collage for the passion and willingness to take up the project.

“Together, we will ensure that KMTC students reach their fullest potential,” she said.

Ms. Blanc reported that the 03 plus project is founded on four key pillars which are institutionalised commitment to Comprehensive Sexual Education (CSE) as well as Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) through policies and curriculum.

Also, Greater uptake by students of improved quality SRHR services and information; Safer, more inclusive and more supportive campus environment for all students; and increased evidence base for CSE/SRHR needs and effective approaches within institutions of higher learning.

Dr. Oluoch, the KMTC Chief Executive Officer, welcomed the partnership noting that it would support the Collage in creating a learning environment that promotes the health and well-being of students, and providing them with knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decision about their sexual and reproductive health.

The 03 Plus project will be piloted in three KMTC Campuses: Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu with a future possibility of cascaded to other Campuses across the country.

In the meeting was UNESCO Regional Office for Eastern Africa 03 plus Programme coordinator Jane Kamau and Education for Health and Well-being Project Assistant/ Cluster Coordinator Jacinta Kagai in the meeting that was attended by senior officials from the Collage.
