Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Marsabit has received a major boost to its clinical training capacity following the commissioning of a new ultra-modern maternity wing at Laisamis Hospital.
The facility, which serves as a key clinical training site for students pursuing Nursing, Clinical Medicine, and Community Health Assistant programmes, will now provide an enhanced environment for hands-on learning an essential requirement in producing skilled and practice-ready health professionals for Marsabit County and beyond.
The newly opened 28-bed maternity wing features a fully equipped surgical theatre, neonatal unit, ultrasound services, and reliable power backup. These additions will broaden the range of clinical cases and procedures accessible to students, offering richer clinical rotations and expanded opportunities to build critical competencies. The upgrade is expected to strengthen the pipeline of health workers able to address maternal and newborn health needs in the region.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the KMTC Campus Principal Dr. Agnes Linus noted that the investment comes at a time when KMTC Marsabit is intensifying both its academic and practical training efforts.
With approximately 300 students currently enrolled, she said the new wing will help the institution advance its mission to produce competent health professionals capable of serving communities across the expansive county.
“For KMTC Marsabit, this investment means more than improved infrastructure; it means better learning, better skills, and ultimately better healthcare for our people. Our students will now train in an environment that reflects the standards we aspire to deliver across the county,” Dr. Linus said.
She also appealed for hostel facilities to support students undertaking clinical rotations in Laisamis. Deputy Governor Solomon Riwe responded by pledging to pursue the request under the county’s Affordable Housing Programme, acknowledging the importance of student welfare in achieving strong training outcomes.
Safaricom representative Patrick Mburu, a key partner in constructing the maternity wing, praised the partnership with KMTC, noting that it plays a central role in strengthening healthcare in the region.
