KMTC graduates first-ever class in Mortuary Science in historic milestone

KMTC’s pioneer Mortuary Science cohort celebrates graduation on Friday, marking the institution’s first-ever milestone in training professional morticians in Kenya.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has marked a historic milestone by graduating its inaugural class in Mortuary Science, the first program of its kind in the institution’s long-standing history.

The graduation ceremony celebrated a cohort of students who have undergone rigorous and emotionally demanding training to prepare for one of the most sensitive yet essential roles in healthcare.

The Mortuary Science program provides learners with a comprehensive, competency-based curriculum that equips them with both technical skills and emotional intelligence. Students are trained in human anatomy, embalming, postmortem care, and grief management, ensuring they are well-prepared to handle human remains with dignity, precision, and professionalism.

The programme also emphasises compassion, recognising the critical responsibility morticians carry in supporting bereaved families through some of life’s most difficult moments.

KMTC officials lauded the graduands for their dedication and resilience, noting that the pioneer class has set a strong foundation for the program’s future. “This class has demonstrated exceptional courage and commitment in mastering a discipline that demands both technical mastery and deep empathy,” said one official during the ceremony.

According to the institution, the introduction of the Mortuary Science course comes at a crucial time, as demand for qualified mortuary professionals continues to rise—particularly in rapidly growing urban areas. The program aims to fill existing gaps in training and practice within the country by producing graduates capable of upholding high standards in postmortem care and public health management.

Graduates expressed pride in being the first to complete the specialised course, acknowledging the program’s transformative impact on their personal growth and career prospects.

The successful launch and graduation of this pioneer class underscore KMTC’s commitment to expanding and modernising healthcare training to meet Kenya’s evolving needs.
