Kitui Special Needs Education boosted as school for Visually Impaired opened

The Special Needs Education yesterday received a boost after the Kitui Comprehensive School for Visually Impaired was official opened.

Speaking during the opening, Dr. Fredrick Haga, Director of Special Needs Education reiterated the government’s ongoing support for students with disabilities to ensure they receive a high-quality education.

“The Ministry of Education recognizes the rights of all children with disabilities in Kenya. It is the responsibility of all of us to ensure that every child with a disability in the country is in school.” Dr. Haga stated during official opening of the Kitui Comprehensive School for Visually Impaired.

The newly constructed school built at a cost of Ksh39 million is located within the grounds of Kitui Central Primary School in Kitui Town.

It was funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Deutsches Blindenhilfswerk, and channeled through Salus Oculi Kenya. The institution is fully equipped with classrooms, dormitories, computer rooms, a library, beds, mattresses, and blankets.

Dr. Haga passionately urged students with disabilities to embrace their aspirations.

“Disability is not inability. If you don’t have dreams while in school, the world will put you in a very difficult position.” He declared

He hailed the institution as a ‘life-changing project’ and extended profound gratitude to the Kitui County government for its unwavering support towards special needs students.

The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of various dignitaries, including Dr. Benson Makali Mulu, the Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Constituency who expressed sincere appreciation to the donors for their invaluable contribution.

“We deeply appreciate the support. The local community recognizes the excellent work you are doing. I want to encourage you to continue this good work.” Dr. Mulu remarked

He further highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Kenya and Germany. Dr. Mulu also noted the presence of two other special schools within his constituency; the Kitui School for the Deaf and the Kitui School for the Mentally Handicapped, reasserting his commitment as a political leader to supporting such vital initiatives.

Kitui County Education Director Ahmed Khalid also extended his appreciation to all partners, including UNICEF, the area MP, children, teachers, and parents. He confirmed that the new school’s dormitories can accommodate 40 boys and 40 girls and expressed his gratitude to the German government for their contribution. Khalid also announced that Kitui County has achieved a 100 percent transition rate for students this year.
