Kitale’s Kibomet secondary principal blames meager funds on motivation of teachers

In 2022 Kibomet Mixed AIC Secondary School in Trans Nzoia sent 145 students to public universities as well 175 in 2023 when the school registered 180 KCSE examiners for KCSE.

And in 2024, the performance was almost similar with the Kiminini Sub-county School recording a batch of 150 university entrants with the trending mini-score of 7.1 which was reflected in the past KCSE results for a decade.

This according to the teachers of the school requires them to be motivated to continue producing better results. They appealed to the principal Daniel Chebukati to consider motivation as witnessed in other schools.

They said the school lacked a proper structure of motivating the academic staff, forcing some of them to transfer to other schools where they were recognized and consequently earn promotions from their employer.

But Chebukati while responding to the allegations blamed lack of enough resources and capitation from the MoE to recommend his teachers on motivation trips such as bench-marking.

He said that while the school’s management recognized the teachers’ role for the good performance in the KCSE, it had also to prioritize school fees for the students who cannot be sent home while the teachers are out school for motivation activities.

The principal further said that the BoM was in the process of replacing the members of the board whose terms had expired in accordance with the policy of the MoE, adding that they were also in consultation with stakeholders on how to fill the vacant positions after the exit of teachers who had sought transfers.

Chebukati explained that the school could not withhold teachers who had applied for transfer voluntarily but make immediate replacements of teachers employed by BoM.

The teachers had lamented over the exit of a computer teacher who had enabled 20 students to score A- in last year’s KCSE. They said no efforts had been made efforts of retaining and rewarding him.

They said the five-year stay of Chebukati had demoralized them compared to the tenure of his predecessor Emmanuel Mukoya who took them to Mwanza in Tanzania, Kampala and Nakuru cities for bench-marking.

Mukoya, the current principal of Kesogon Mixed and former chair of KESSHA Trans Nzoia County, is remembered to have had a free hand with principals taking their teachers out for education tours.

The Kibomet teachers have since suspected a hidden agenda on those who had overstayed on the board of management as officials.

Chebukati, however, said the school had undergone challenges that include the late clearing of debts to suppliers, the upholding of students due to non-payment of fees and paying salaries to BoM teachers, forcing them outsource some services.

“As much we appreciate all these challenges, we are steadfast to see no student is out of class for small debts. We are also obliged to see our teachers in a better teaching environment as well as paying our creditors”, he said in a telephone interview ,adding he had a constitutional right to work for any school as dictated by TSC after examining his request.
