Kitale National Poly elects new student leaders in hotly contested polls

The Kitale National Polytechnic ushered in a new era of student leadership following a highly contested and volatile election held on Tuesday.

The newly elected council members were sworn into office on Wednesday during a ceremony on the institution’s playground.

Mark Buchunju was elected President, bringing a strong vision for enhancing student engagement and welfare.

Yasmin Akinyi assumed the position of Deputy President while Harrison Neondo took up the vital role of Secretary General, responsible for ensuring effective communication and administration throughout the student body.

Okaka Sultan manages the finances as the newly elected Finance Director, while Abigael Cherong’ was elected the Women Representative to address the interests and issues of female students.

The new leadership also include Richard Gicharu, who was appointed Secretary for Special Needs, ensuring that the polytechnic’s diverse student population is represented and supported.

Chief Principal John Akola expressed his satisfaction with the electoral process, highlighting significant student engagement as a sign of democratic maturity within the institution.

“We thank the students for turning out to participate in the elections and to nurture their democratic right of voting,” said Akola.

The newly elected President pledged to maintain a transparent and accountable administration regarding student affairs.

“I want to assure my fellow students that I will abide by the promises I made to them while seeking their votes during the campaign period,” he said.

In a gesture of unity, Akinyi, the Vice President, extended an olive branch to the opposition, which had initially disputed the election results.

“Let us all join hands in championing the interests of the students. We welcome you to share any ideas that you might have since you also had a vision when you vied,” she stated.

The new leadership was officially consecrated by Joseph Odongo, head of education at the Catholic Diocese of Kitale, who urged the new council members to prioritize the interests of the student body.

“Always have the interests of the students in mind since they have bestowed their confidence in you to advocate their issues as a linkage with the polytechnic management,” said Father Odongo.
