Kisumu schools join initiative to boost country’s forest cover

By Fredrick Odiero

The Kisumu County government has now identified primary schools within the county as one of the tools of enhancing the country’s tree cover.

The initiative will involve the 4K (Kuungana, Kufanya, Kusaidia Kenya) clubs under the Green Cities Initiative.

According to the County Executive Committee Member for Education Mr John Awiti, the  tree planting demonstrations have been  organized by the County Department of Agriculture in partnership with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)  and the County Government as part of their conservation efforts geared towards attaining 10% forest cover and to achieve sustainable agri–food systems and green lifestyles for better African cities

While in Kisumu, Mr Awiti said that the pupils from the 4K club will take  part in the tree planting exercise as the primary planters giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility for the program which is aimed at providing a greener future for schools.

“The tree-planting initiative is based on a realization that many schools have buildings in place but no trees to enhance the environment,” he said.

He said that the students had learnt a lot about the importance of conserving the environment for posterity and that they will also enhance their knowledge in environmental conservation and protection.

“This will inculcate a sense of responsibility in them to become environment champions both at school and at home,” he added.

A number of learning institutions have already joined the initiative after demonstrations including Union Primary and Tido Primary schools.

The schools are targeted to become centers of excellence where people will learn the best practices on tree planting and management.
