Kisumu now shifts development agenda to ECDE

John Awiti, Kisumu County Education CECM.

The County Government of Kisumu is now shifting its development agenda to early childhood development centres and vocational training facilities.

Moving forward, the devolved unit has put in motion processes which will ensure that early childhood development centres are constructed according to stipulated rules.

Education CECM John Awiti said the department has developed some ECDE classrooms within primary schools in the sub-county where, unfortunately, the government did not consider young ECDE learners when doing the construction of toilets.

To that end, Awiti said, the department is coming up with a policy on infrastructural development where ECDEs should be looked at from a broad perspective whereby all aspects are put in place.

He was speaking at the Tom Mboya Labour College during the launch of the County Mashinani programme.

He also said there has been a lack of consistency in the ECDE feeding programme by the county, lamenting the budgetary constraints that have hampered the consistent supply of food stuff to all per-primary facilities.

“The department has pursued a multi-sectorial approach to nutrition in ECDEs, which involves parents and the departments of health, agriculture and water to supplement what the county is doing,” he said.

In Awasi Onjiko, Awiti said there is need for additional ECDE since the one there is overstretched with 100 learners against one teacher.

Similarly, he said Apondo ECDE has been in existence for three years but has never been opened.

He said other projects which need completion include Menara, Gul, Wambi, Ngiti, Yao, Kisure, Olasi and Ogwedhi ECDEs.
