Kisumu National Polytechnic Chief Principal Mrs. Catherine Kelonye has revealed that the World Bank has funded the institution Shs 1.08 billion for the construction of a textile factory.

The textile factory will be one of the biggest in the East African region and the factory will directly employ 500 people.

The major threat to the textile sector has been the sale of second-hand clothes and to contour that challenge, the college boss said that they have already identified farmers to be commissioned to plant cotton to meet the demand for raw materials once the factory is up and running.

She revealed that the institution has been organizing successful international conferences on innovation and transformative trends.

The institution’s administration also organizes a capacity building training for members of the governing council and the senior staff.

“We offer courses that are aligned to programmes by the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and other relevant bodies such as KASNEB,” said Kelonye.

She further added that they are determined to support the big four agenda objectives as espoused by the national government.

With a total student population of 12,690 (7,356 males and 5,334 females), the institution is poised to cruise even greater heights in innovation and training.

Kelonye said the institution has 400 staff and that they have a shortage of tutors since some have been leaving for greener pastures.
