Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT Kisumu branch Executive Secretary David Obuon has received a major boost and elections bear after one of his opponents stepped down in his favour.
Dan Omuga who was in the race until last week threw in the towel in order to support Obuon who is seeking re-election this weekend elections.
Omuga who is a teacher at Nyang’ande said he has bowed out of the race for the purpose of continuity and cohesion of the branch.
Meanwhile a new independent opinion poll conducted among KNUT- registered teachers across the four sub-counties of Kisumu City,Kisumu West, Kisumu East, Kisumu Central and Kadibo — showed Obuon taking a clear and decisive lead over new entrants
The survey was conducted between December 10 and December 20, 2025, sampling 674 teachers proportionally across all sub-counties through face-to-face interviews and structured phone calls.
The poll carries a margin of error of ±4.5% at a 95% confidence level.
The findings confirms the trust and the confidence the teachers of Kisumu have always had in Obuon in which he has constantly held a major lead in the previous opinion poll conducted a month earlier. The latest results indicated that Obuon has consolidated support beyond his home base, transforming the contest into one where he now holds a firm branch-wide advantage in Kisumu East Sub-County.

Obuon maintains overwhelming dominance in his home sub-county, polling 96%, compared to 4% of his competitors. Teachers in Kisumu East cited Obuon’s accessibility, visibility, and effectiveness in his current role as KNUT Branch Executive Secretary, describing him as hands-on and responsive to teachers’ concerns.
In Kisumu West Sub-County, Obuon also posted a strong lead with 92% supporting his re- election. Respondents pointed to his increased engagement, frequent school visits, and sustained mobilization efforts, noting a marked improvement from the previous poll.
He took the lead in Kisumu Central registering 66% compared to 34% for his opponents, as teachers within the area indicating a growing confidence in his leadership style, with many citing the need for renewed energy and assertive representation at the branch level.
In Kadibo Sub-County, Obuon retains his strongest showing in Kadibo with 93% against his opponents 7%. Respondents acknowledged his experience, institutional knowledge, and incumbency advantage, the teachers are out to gain more from him.
Additionally, the poll highlighted confidence in Obuon’s leadership in the branch, driven by, his expanded branch-wide visibility as current KNUT branch boss, strong mobilization structures beyond Kisumu City Branch.

However, according to poll analysts, this poll reflects consolidation rather than fluctuation.
“Obuon has successfully translated his home support into wider branch appeal. With commanding leads in three of the four sub-counties, he now enters the race as the clear frontrunner.”
The opinion poll places Obuon firmly ahead in the Kisumu City KNUT race, with strong leads across Kisumu West, Kisumu Central, Kisumu East and Kadibo competitive showing even in the opponents’ home area.
