Kisumu dominates trophy baskets in Nyanza ball games

Kisumu County dominated in the second term 2022 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association ball games in Nyanza Region.

The three-days fete attracted all sub counties from the lake region that paraded their teams to compete in various ball matches and other indoor games at Asumbi Teachers Training College.

In Soccer, Kisumu Day School beat Agoro Sare from Homabay 2-0 to retain its 2018 championship. Earlier on, it defeated Gesabakwa Secondary School from Kisii County to gain a slot to the finals with Agoro Sare which had trounced Kanga from Migori County.

Another glory for soccer teams went to Nyakach Girls from Kisumu as they thrashed Kobala Girls School 1-0 in their home county, Homabay. Nyakach team coach Mr. Kenneth Owino attributed the win to self-discipline of the girls and consistent support from their principal Mrs. Violet Opala.

In Rugby, St Mary’s Yala from Kisumu County crushed Nduru High School from Kisii County 12-10 to emerge as the new Regional Champions.

Kisumu Day retained their championship after vanquishing Agoro Sare 2-0 in Kisii school. Kisumu Day has been basking in its glory after scooping it from Gesero mixed Secondary School from Kisii County back in 2018.

Sagege Secondary School from Migori County was taught a lesson by St. Joseph’s of Kisumu. In the first set they ran neck to neck at 1-1 but finally Sagege was forced to throw its last kick at 1-3 that left St. Josephs’ to glow with the trophy.

Kisumu Day School did not spare Ring’a School of Homabay in hockey when they got the better of them finishing the game at 1-0.

In the Girls’ matches category, Nyakongo from Siaya County conquered Nyakach from Kisumu 3-2 before proudly moving to the podium to receive their winning trophy.

The girls of Kakrao in Migori County slapped Nyakembene of Kisii County in the face before routing Miranga 30-17 to be crowned the Handball queens of the region.

Maseno School lost its traditional Handball glory to Rang’ala of Homabay County. The team coach Mr. Dan Warinda accepted the defeat but commended the boys who put up a spirited fight.

Speaking while concluding the event, Nyanza Region Secondary Schools Sports Association Chairman Mr. George Oloo termed the matches as thrilling and promising.

He thanked all the participants and education stakeholders for their coordination and contribution to making the event a success.

Mr Oloo wished all the proceeding teams good luck as they represent the region in the National competitions to be held in Nakuru next week.
