Kisumu county government has set aside Sh45 million  bursary for  972 mid high school students from across the 7 sub-counties in the lake region, Deputy governor Dr.Mathew Owili has said.

In January, the county government gave scholarships to1260 beneficiaries in universities and driving schools.

He said Sh160,722,826 had been disbursed as bursaries and scholarships to students in schools, universities, tertiary colleges and driving schools in the past two years.

“The cabinet recently resolved that they would be paying school fees to 2 students from each of the 35 wards who wish to pursue marine training and they will get also 70 students that can trained in other courses,”said Mr Owili.

The bursaries and scholarships have changed the life of many needy students who had been desperate in seeking assistance to enable them pursue their dream careers, he said.

The county government will encourage local students to take advantage of the availability training opportunities in the lake region, he added.

The parents who wanted their children to become swimmers and other related marine jobs were asked to apply for the scholarships beginning in the next financial year, said Dr.Mathew.

The marine school was one of the projects that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Kisumu recently.

“We have allocated Sh12,492,000 to Nyakach subcounty and the rest of subcounties will follow,” he said.

“I want to assure the people of Kisumu the selection of beneficiaries of these bursaries will be done fairly.

The applications will be handled a non-partisan ward bursary committee who in turn will send the evaluation forms to the county department of education,” he said.

“We have put in place a committee to solve any complaints and grievances that may occur within the county region and I am appealing to students who will be getting bursaries to study and work hard in order to fulfil their career dreams which is a good way to pay back the taxes,” he added.
