Kisumu County marks education day, donates Ksh1 million educational resources for schools

Kisumu County on July 21, marked a significant milestone in its education agenda with a vibrant Education Day celebration at Ratta Mixed Secondary School in Seme Sub-county.

The event, led by Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, brought together teachers, learners, parents, education officials and development partners to highlight the county’s continued investment in quality education.

The celebration was headlined by the distribution of Ksh1 million worth of educational resources, provided through collaboration between the Kisumu County Department of Education and Longhorn Publishers

The donation included textbooks for core subjects, trophies to reward academic excellence and Early Childhood Development (ECD) learning materials such as flashcards and activity kits.

Speaking during the event, Governor Nyong’o emphasized the county’s commitment to nurturing young minds and creating opportunities for learners across all education levels.

He added that the provision of educational tools and materials was not just about meeting immediate learning needs but about investing in the long term growth of the region. “Investing in our children’s education is an investment in the entire county’s progress,” the governor stated.

The day also served as a platform for dialogue between the county government and community stakeholders.

Teachers and parents expressed gratitude for the support while also raising concerns about classroom shortages, teacher deployment and the need for more equitable distribution of bursaries. The governor welcomed the feedback, assuring residents that his administration would continue working to address challenges in the education sector.

The materials distributed reached both secondary and pre-primary levels. Secondary schools received textbooks in Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and Sciences. ECD centres were supplied with colourful, interactive kits designed to support early literacy and numeracy, while top performing schools and students were recognized with trophies and certificates to boost motivation and morale.

Governor Nyong’o noted that this initiative was part of a broader strategy to ensure that all children in Kisumu, regardless of location or background, have access to quality education. He reaffirmed his administration’s plans to expand similar interventions across other sub-counties in the coming months. He also acknowledged the critical role played by partners such as Longhorn Publishers in complementing government efforts.

The event featured musical performances, poetry and traditional dances by students, creating an atmosphere of celebration and unity. Education officials reiterated their focus on improving infrastructure, enhancing teacher training and increasing resource allocation to underserved schools.
