Kisumu County launches tree planting initiative in schools

Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga addressing the press.

Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga has urged schools in the area to support the Greening Kisumu initiative which focuses on improving the urban environment and strengthening urban-rural linkages and resilience of urban food systems.

Speaking during the launch of the initiative – founded by the County Government and sponsored by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) – at Taifa Park, Wanga said that learning institutions play a major role in fostering such initiatives and encouraged all schools to set up a tree nursery and assign each student to plant and nurture a tree.

The Manager said that they intend to break the world record by planting 500,000 trees adding that the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) kitty will set aside money to procure tree seedlings.

“We want the city to be like Singapore so that you can only see trees as you land here,” he said.

Wanga said that the county in partnership with FAO has been training members of the 4K Club in four primary schools – Kisumu Union Primary School in Kisumu Central, Tido Primary School in Kisumu East, Rabuor Primary in Nyando and Usoma Primary in Kisumu West sub-county.

He added that these schools will be bestowed Centre Of Excellence status where people will learn best practices on tree planting and management.

Also in attendance was the Kisumu Central Member of Parliament (MP) Dr. Joshua Oron.
