Kisii students urged to speak up and shun suicide

By Enock Okong’o

The youth have been asked to open up and share their troubles and challenges with close friends or family members to avoid bottling up their feelings which later affects them negatively.

Speaking at Eberege sub location in Kisii County while condoling with the family of Gideon Okong’o Nyamechi whose son committed suicide at their home, retired pastor Harrison Moronya said that it was against God and human beings to take their lives.

According to his mother, her third-year son at Kisii University, Dennis Gideon Okong’o came home during the Mashujaa Day celebrations to have fun with the family.

“We had supper well and he retired to his room to sleep after having a long conversation over phone with his sister,” narrated the mother.

The family members woke up the following morning and became worried after he delayed to report at the main house for breakfast.

His younger brother was sent to wake him up only to find the body hanging from the ceiling.

He screamed and attracted the family and villagers who found the victim had already died.

Area Assistant chief Mr. Benard Bichang’a confirmed the death and said that the body had been moved to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) for postmortem.

“He was found dead but he did not leave any suicide note,” confirmed Mr. Bichang’a.

The bizarre death comes scarcely four months after another University student commited suicide by drinking cattle spray after a disagreement with his father.

KTRH Officer in charge of mental therapy and youth outreach services Mr. Benard Obwogo, said that cases of suicide had become rampant in the area.

He attributed them to general depression, teenage love affairs gone sour and lack of self-control and discipline among the youth.

He appealed to students especially those in University to utilize their exposure and the knowledge to forge a constructive life.
