The Kisii County Woman Representative’s office is committed to supporting education by providing water to schools, thereby saving time wasted by students travelling to rivers to fetch water. Additionally, the office empowers widows to access funds to support their children’s education.

Speaking at Taracha Primary School in Nyaribari Masaba Constituency on Thursday, June 10, 2025, the Woman Representative, Donya Aburi, said that her office has drilled many boreholes across the country to provide water to schools and homesteads, but said that was not sufficient. She decided to install water tanks on top of the boreholes for increased water harvesting in schools.

She asked heads of institutions to engage in harvesting water during the rainy season and use it during dry spells when it is scarce.

The Woman MP said that the availability of water on the schools’ compounds will cushion girl students from moving out of the compounds to go and look for water at the rivers far from school where they sometimes meet rural school dropouts and bodaboda riders who lure them with money and involve them in premarital sexual activities that lead to teenage pregnancies.

She asked boys to see girls as their sisters and stand to protect them against sexual predators who end up luring them into early marriages.

“Boys, I appeal to you to avoid luring these young girls into evil activities and even acting as go- betweens to them to sugar daddies who end up spoiling them.”She said.

During the meeting that brought together residents of all ages involved various fun-making sports activities that ranged from athletics, tug of war and balancing pots on the head.

Those who emerged victorious in various categories during the competitions, were rewarded with various presents including goats, blankets and cash.

More than five schools received water tanks as more than 50 widows and widowers were given goats to help them eke a living and support their children.

The Woman MP asked other well wishers to chip in and help the project for sustainable education development and women empowerment.

She regretted that the National Government Affirmative Action Fund ( NGAAF) is not enough but assured the residents of her commitment to use the little she gets to share with them for development.

“What we receive from the National Treasury is not enough to satisfy all the needy cases but I ask you to use whatever you receive prudently and finally we shall reach where I want you to be,” she said.

Principals who attended the meeting to receive tanks for their schools, thanked the Woman Representative’s office for the gesture saying it will assist a lot in the water harvesting programmes in their schools.
