The second year students of Kisii University were on Tuesday suspended indefinitely from the main campus for demonstrating against tuition fee increment.
The parents have appealed to the institution to be considerate whenever they send the students away after unrests.
Speaking to Education News through the Parents’ Association of Kenya, Kisii branch representative Mr. Paul Mainga said that when closure of universities take place, female students often fall victims of rape from either their colleagues or the rogue public.
“We do not approve of the unrest in our institutions of higher learning but only appealing to the senate to find a convenient procedure of sending the suspects away while safeguarding the security of the female students,” said Mainga.
According to the acting registrar of the University, Dr. Joash Kerongo, the learners were sent home over alleged demonstration because of the move by the institution to increase school fees. The learners blame the University for the action at the face of the ongoing financial constraints occasioned by the Corona virus pandemic.
The students lamented that the Sh10,000 addition to school fees without any explanation was too much for their parents to pay.
It was on that background that the students went on rampage, causing damage on structures within the campus.
The senate after calling for an urgent meeting resolved to send the students indefinitely to avert further damages.
In a letter dated 12th October 2021, the registrar warned the affected students to remain on campus at their own peril as action would be taken against them.
