Kisii University has launched the construction of hostels complex to accommodate the influx number of students and offload parents the burden of renting houses for their children.
Speaking during the handing over of Kisii University student Village site to the constructor, the University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Nathan Ogechi said the project will house 1,680 students in modern secured houses with constant water supply and enough internet access suitable for them to live in a dignified life.
Leading the groundbreaking ceremony, Prof. Ogechi said that the project is among the long term development plans envisioned by the University to attract international students that will mingle with local students to cement the coexistence of nations as one family for Global peace.
“Universities are meant to provide practical knowledge to enable communities to live together harmoniously inspite of their cultural and values’ diversities and that is what Kisii University is doing.” He said.
The VC said that the institution has a population of 24,000 students and wished all of them could be domiciled in the University but decried of scarce resources and space but assured parents whose children will be operating from outside the University of their Security, saying good relationship with the community has prevailed.
He said that the breaking of the ground was an urgent follow up of President William Ruto’s order when he visited Kisii County recently and promised to see students supported to have conducive learning environment by providing them with modern affordable accommodation.
During the visit, President Ruto who joined faithfuls at a church service at Kisii Gospel Embassy, said the government had earmarked the construction of affordable housing project at Kisii Prisons Centre.

He said the Centre will be relocate Nyanturago rural area to pave way for construction of the houses.
The site handing over ceremony was attended by Kisii County housing director Lynnette Nyakiti who represented the State for housing and Urban development, Nyaribari Chache Constituency NG-CDF Manager Evans Makori who represented the MP Zaheer Jhanda among other leaders.
The director lauded the National Government for working hand in hand with the County Governments to enhance rapid development in their regions especially in the support of education and health sectors.
She said that the completion of the University’s’ Students Village houses will provide a big financial relief to the parents who struggle to get money to rent houses in Kisii town for their children.
Nyakiti asked the Kisii Community to appreciate the National Government’s effort to better the lives of her people by investing in the quality education of their children for the future stability of this country.
“We are one government but working under the new set up of devolution whose main objective is to take services nearer to wananchi and our people should be reminded that way.” She said.
The director said that further affordable housing projects geared towards making the students’, life easy were going on at Riragia Technical Institute in Marani Subcounty,Riamo in Gucha,Keroka in Masaba South ,Kisii National Polytechnic and Kenya Medical Training College( KMTC) Kisii Campus.
